A Storied Past
Known during the Civil War as the "Gateway to the Deep South," Chattanooga was a crucial location for the Confederacy. Union and Confederate forces clashed here twice in 1863, first at the Battle of Chickamauga in September, and later during the Chattanooga Campaign in November.
Today, both battles are commemorated at Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park. Straddling the border between Tennessee and Georgia, the park was established in 1890 as America's first national military park. It's just minutes from downtown Chattanooga, and offers a wealth of opportunities to play, explore, reflect, and learn more about the city's storied and complicated past.
